If a character is reduced to zero Wounds and fail the STR+MTL check they fall unconscious. How long are they unconscious for? Until they heal 1 wound back? If combat is over should a character still make STR+MTL checks until they inevitably pass out?

That should be on pg 24. The way I read it, if # wounds == MTL x 2, they make the check to remain conscious. If they fail, they collapse, are able to talk, but unable to act.
They only go unconscious if #wounds > MTL x2, in which case if they fail, they go unconscious, and are DYING and must be revived within their MTL x 2 rounds before they die.
As far as out of combat, if the # of wounds == MTL x 2, I'd imagine they they'd automatically slump down, conscious but unable to act (until healed). The reason being, they don't suffer the penalty to their skills until out of combat as (according to pg 22) they unconsciously are drawing more energy from the flux while in combat, which fades after combat. If after combat, they are at MTL x 2 in wounds, I'd say they just don't have the energy to proceed.

apoc40 is correct. I've updated the text in the book to say:
"After a character suffers a number of wounds equal to his [MTL x 2], he must attempt a [STR + MTL] check vs TN 11 if he wants to remain on his feet; he must repeat this check each turn after taking his actions, until combat ends."
